What a season for Marconi Fencing Academy!

In 2024, our Marconi fencers were unstoppable, competing across school, state, and national levels under the guidance of our head coach, Dimi Giovani. We’re thrilled to celebrate the remarkable achievements of our athletes, whether they were fighting for top rankings or stepping into competitive fencing for the first time. It’s been a year of growth and excitement for our club in foil events, with Aleks also proudly representing Marconi on both state and national stages in épée. Here are some of the standout moments from our 2024 season!

2024 Season Opener

Peter, Joshua, Christian, and Fed kicked off the season at the NSW Fencing Centre with a day of friendly competition. It was a first for Christian in the open men’s foil category, providing valuable experience for him and the entire team. Fed came close to the podium, finishing in a commendable 5th place.

Australian Fencing Circuit #1

Following the opener, our fencers were ready for a bigger challenge at the Australian Fencing Circuit (AFC) #1 in Sydney.

In men’s foil, Robert ranked 6th after poules, then showcased his resilience by battling through elimination rounds and defeating Hong Kong’s Wun Sang Chan in the final to secure the gold!

In the women’s events, Candice represented Marconi in foil, finishing 20th, while Aleks achieved a top-32 finish in épée. In the mixed veterans’ foil, Peter brought more Marconi spirit, finishing in 12th place.

2024 State Championships

Peterson and Joshua took part in the Open Men’s Foil State Championships, with a competitive field of 17. Joshua fenced with grit, finishing in 10th place, and Peterson delivered a stellar performance, earning bronze and a spot on the podium!

NSW School Competitions

Christian kept up his momentum, representing Macarthur High School in the Roberta Nutt School Competition and placing 43rd among experienced school fencers. Candice also fenced for Macarthur, bringing home a bronze medal!

Christian continued to improve at the NSW School Championships, finishing in the top 32 from a field of 45. Candice added another bronze to her collection, and Geet also gained valuable competitive experience. Later in the season, Joshua represented Sefton High School and achieved a respectable top-16 finish out of 46 fencers.

DH McKenzie – Australian Senior and Veteran Championships

The season took some of our fencers to Brisbane, where Robert finished just outside the top 8 in men’s foil, placing 9th, while Aleks put up a strong fight in women’s épée, ending in 34th.

NSW State Cadet Championships

Our cadet fencers Joshua, Christian, and Candice continued to showcase their skill and dedication in the 2024 state championships. They even teamed up for the mixed teams event and came away with bronze medals!

NSW President’s Cup

As the year drew to a close, Marconi’s fencers shone at the 2024 President’s Cup, with Peterson, Joshua, and Fed all reaching the podium. Peterson took home gold, Joshua secured silver, and Fed earned bronze. A fantastic way to finish the season!

The Road Ahead

The Australian fencing season has now shifted to better align with the international calendar, finishing in May 2025 with the Australian Fencing Championships, followed by the Asian and World Fencing Championships in June and July. Our focus now turns to the Australian Fencing Championships which is planned to be held in Sydney.

In Summary

  • Robert’s gold at the first AFC event and his impressive 3rd ranking in Australian Men’s Foil positions him well for potential selection to represent Australia in international FIE events.
  • Aleks gained valuable experience competing at the national level in women’s épée, securing a 38th-place ranking in Australia.
  • Peterson consistently excelled at state level, claiming podium spots throughout the year and proudly ranking 1st in NSW.
  • Joshua and Fed’s dedication to state-level competitions earned them rankings of 5th and 9th, respectively.

Congratulations to all our fencers for their incredible hard work and determination throughout the year! We also thank our coaching team, Dimi Giovani and Sam Salemi, for their unwavering support and guidance. Here’s to an exciting 2025 season as we look forward to seeing even more Marconi fencers join the competitive ranks!
