About

Marconi Fencing Academy History

Marconi Fencing Academy was founded and established in 2005 by Joseph & Sam Salemi. This father and son team came up with the idea to provide the sport of fencing to those in the Bossley Park local area (this includes Fairfield, Cabramatta, Liverpool and Hoxton Park). Our intent is to make fencing available to anyone who wishes to participate and to assist in the development of the sport in the South West of Sydney as well as the State. The club, consisting of more than 50 members presently, welcomes members of all standards. The club has a large amount of equipment available for the use of members, offering training with foil, epee and sabre.

Marconi Fencing continues to be well respected and has grown from strength to strength since the club started..  Several of our club members also compete in State competitions run by the New South Wales Fencing Association, participating in both individual and team competitions. The club also participates in all national competitions run by the Australian Fencing Federation. Our fencers have achieved outstanding results and individual efforts  that are a testament to the leadership, coaching and mentoring of Antonio Signorello, the former Italian Olympic Coach, who has had an enormous influence since the inception of Fencing within our Club.

What Is Fencing?

The sport of fencing is so fast and athletic, a far cry from the choreographed bouts you see on a film or on the stage. Instead of swinging from a chandelier or leaping from balconies, you will see two fencers perform an intense dance on a 1.5m x 14m strip. The movement is do fast the touches are scored electronically – more like Star Wars, The 3 Musketeers & Zorro. Foil, Epee and Sabre are the three weapons used in the sport of fencing.

While it is not unusual for fencers to compete in all three events, they generally choose to develop their skills in one weapon. Foil and Epee are point-thrusting weapons. Sabre is a point-thrusting as well as a cutting weapon. The target areas differ for the three weapons, though all three are scored electronically.

Modern fencing has evolved from age-old techniques used to settle quarrels among disputing gentlemen. Complete mastery of all maneuvers is an absolute prerequisite for duel entrance-exploration attack, defense, counter attack, fake and camouflage must be studied and conquered.

The most subtle lapse of judgement or technical fault can lead to dire consequences. Mastering the art of sword fighting and its countless techniques, not only allowed a better chance at survival, it equipped the combatant with skills needed to protect and uphold honor and dignity.
